Easy Earring Packaging

So you have finally sold your first set of earrings made in your home-based studio. Congratulations! Now you need to ship them to your customer. Do you wrap the earrings in tissue paper and stick them in an envelope? No! Make your packaging stand out and your customer will perceive your jewelry studio as more professional and will be more likely to recommend you to friends and family. There are many ways to package up earrings but here I’ll show you my favorite.

Assemble Your Materials

Assemble Your Materials

The first step is to assemble your materials. Measure your earrings to see how long they are. If you tend to make longer, dangly earrings, you’ll need longer bags. If yours dangle only a bit, as mine do here, then you can use smaller bags. I buy my bags from USBox.com. They are not expensive and they are of good quality. The bags I like have a triangle die-cut hole at the top for hanging. These are great if you do craft shows and want to keep your inventory clean and smudge free. However, be aware that people like to touch before they buy so be sure to also set out a number of unpackaged jewelry pieces for people to handle. Click here for the link to the Lip-N-Tape Header Bags that I prefer. Scroll down the page to the second item listed for these bags. (The top item listed is a similar bag without the hole at top – also nice for merchandise.) These bags come in various sizes and are purchased by the thousand. At last look, the bags I like, which are item number LHB35 and measure 3 3/4″ x 5 1/2″, sold for $46. That’s only 46 cents per bag – not too bad.

Once you’ve decided on your bag size, you’ll need to cut card stock to fit your bags. Purchase colored or white card stock at craft stores like Michael’s or JoAnn Fabrics or at office supply stores or even stores like Target or Walmart. Choose a color that complements your business colors. I’ve chosen shades of tans and browns for my store, HippoMojo.com. I also use blue as my store colors but I decided that a brilliant blue card stock did not look well with my jewelry at all. If in doubt, go neutral with white, brown, or black. You can always add color with stickers later.

Cut Card Stock To Fit

Measure the size of the bags and cut card stock about 1/4″ smaller to fit. Use a paper cutter for the best results. Erase any pencil marks you may have made.

Use A Hole Punch For Earring Holes

Use A Hole Punch For Earring Holes

Use a hole punch to punch two holes in your card stock to thread the earrings through. Position these holes about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the card stock. Adjust this depending on the length of your earrings. I purchased a small hole punch from a craft store for this but you can also use a regular one. The small ones look a little classier though. You can also buy a hole punch that makes a decorative shape like a flower or star if you think this is appropriate for your business and jewelry style. When in doubt, go simple. Next, we’ll thread ribbon through the holes.

Choose A Decorative Ribbon

Choose A Decorative Ribbon

Get some thin silky ribbon from a craft store or dollar store. Mine is 1/8″. Be sure to coordinate the width of your ribbon with the width of the hole punch you purchase. Thread the ribbon through one of the holes and loop it through the earring. Then thread it back through the same hole, pulling it snug.
