How to Make Plush Faux Fur Monsters

I’m not crazy about sewing, but I am totally in love with faux fur. I get mine from a designer in California who has access to the fabric district and has a shop on Etsy.

I also love monsters!!!

The Process

Step 1: Choose and Cut Your Fur
You can buy faux fur at a craft store, fabric store, or online. You don’t need much, just a length about 6-10″ wide and 8-12″ long, depending on how big you want your monster. My fabric comes in scraps, often triangular or irregular in shape, so I trim it down to squares or rectangles. Get yourself two pieces of the same size. Be sure that the fur direction runs downward on both sides.

Step 2: Choose and Cut Your Fabric Type and Color and Assemble Your Monster’s Face, Horns, and Paws
I usually use felt for the faces, horns, and paws. Felt is a bit stiff and is easy to cut, sew, and work with. Felt can be either of polyester, which is available in your local craft store in small packs or of wool, which can be purchased at a fabric store or online. Pick a felt that is not too thin and cheesy looking.

Cut out your monster’s face, horns, and paws. See my patterns below for a guideline. Sew the monster’s felt face to the fur with embroidery floss using a blanket stitch. Poke holes for the eyes with the point of a scissor blade. Fasten eyes. Sew a mouth with embroidery thread. Set monster aside.

Using your machine, sew together the horns and paws, turn right side out, and stuff. Align monster body, fur side in. Sew along top side of monster. Place horns and hand paws at side and pin to secure. Sew sides of monster. Turn right side out and stuff. Attach feet and sew bottom of monster.

You’re done! Sit back and admire your monster. Give him lots of love and feed him often. No vegetables – he won’t eat those. Don’t expect him to clean up after himself or do any chores around the house.

Unfortunately, I don’t have photos of all the monsters I’ve made, but here are some of them.
